BACK TEXT: MACKINAC BRIDGE The longest suspension bridge in the western hemisphere and the fifth longest in the world connects the lower and upper peninsulas of Michigan. The bridge was completed in 1957, weighs over 1,000,000 tons, is 5 miles in total length, and has almost 6,000,000 rivets and bolts. An average of 11,000 vehicles cross the bridge daily.
