BACK TEXT: COMMON LOON Scientific name: Gavia immer Common Loons are excellent swimmers, speeding their way underwater to catch fish and other aquatic foods. Although they swim well, they look ungainly as they take flight. They require a long "runway", running awkwardly before taking to the sky. The early morning call of a loon on a fog covered lake is unique and favored by most outdoor enthusiasts. They have several different calls - each one communicating a unique message.
